How to Remove Pet Odors from Your Home

As the weather (finally!) cools off, your dog may be spending more and more time outside. That means, they may be bringing more and more odors inside. In today’s blog post, let’s look at some ways to remove pet odors from your home.

But first: Why do dogs smell the way they do?

A dog’s skin produces an oil that helps your four-legged friend stay healthy. Unfortunately, it has a distinct — and not always pleasant — scent. The odor may be especially strong after an October day spent lounging in the Central Florida sunshine! Regularly bathing and brushing your pet helps control the smell. If the odor lingers, you may need to get them checked for a skin or dental infection.

Once you’ve confirmed the scent is just, well, dog, there are some solutions you can consider to help remove those stubborn pet odors from your home.

Here are five cleaning tips to follow:

  • Vacuum the dog beds once a week (or more if your pet is a prolific shedder).

  • Wash the dog beds every other week.

  • Vacuum your floors at least twice a week, again depending on your dog’s shedding habits. A cordless vacuum can be helpful for spot cleaning (like daily vacuuming on a rug where your pup likes to nap), while a robot vacuum is convenient for daily, full-house cleaning while you’re at the office.

  • Mop hard floors like tile or vinyl with a strong cleaning solution (vinegar will do the trick!) and very hot water.

  • Use a cover or blanket on furniture that your pup frequents. Be sure to wash it weekly.

What about those pet odors that somehow defy your weekly cleaning efforts?

If you need to take your cleaning to the next level, liberally sprinkle baking soda on furniture or carpet and let it sit overnight before vacuuming it up. It’s a natural odor eliminator and totally safe for your furry friend.

Another option? Spray a spritz of vodka (yes — vodka!) on areas where your dog frequently lies.

For especially strong pet smells, you need a product that absorbs the scent instead of just covering it. Fresh Wave Continuous Release Odor Eliminator is a great option that’s both biodegradable and non-toxic. It’s made with soy, lime, pine needle, aniseed, clove, and cedar wood, so your home is sure to smell fresh after using it!

If you need a spot-cleaning option, try Citrus Magic Pet Odor Eliminator. It immediately neutralizes even the strongest pet odors. Plus, it can be used on carpet, furniture…and your dog’s fur.

Lastly, I love the Sand + Paws Scented Candle Collection from Sand + Fog. Scents like Ocean Mist, Vanilla Sandalwood, and Apple Cider neutralize pet odors. Plus, the packaging is pet-themed and adorable!
