Nutrition Tips for Your Pets

When it comes to your pet’s health, a simple change in their diet, including their food and their treats, can make a world of difference in their energy levels, weight, and underlying health conditions.

In today’s blog post, let’s discuss five nutrition tips for your pets.

1. Talk to your vet about supplements.

Just like you, your pet can take vitamins and supplements to support their health. For instance, a daily supplement like Dasuquin® can improve joint health in both dogs and cats. Omega-3 fatty acids are another popular supplement, helping to reduce inflammation, improve skin and coat health, support heart function, and even manage conditions like allergies and arthritis.

2. Support or treat health concerns with a specially-formulated diet.

By simply switching your pup’s food, you can reduce and even eliminate food allergies and skin conditions. For instance, if your pet is struggling with an allergen, you can opt for a hypoallergenic diet. Similarly, if you’ve noticed aggressive scratching, a dull coat, or excessive shedding, your pet may have an underlying health condition that’s causing skin irritation. Chances are, dietary recommendations will be included in their treatment plan.

Other conditions that can be at least partially managed with proper nutrition include:

  • obesity

  • diabetes

  • kidney and urinary diseases, including balder stones

  • pancreatitis

  • thyroid disease

  • heart disease

  • dental disease

  • osteoarthritis, mobility, and other joint concerns

  • liver disease

  • cognitive disease

3. Avoid sharing certain treats.

Although bones, hooves, and antlers are popular treats for pups to chew on, they are so hard that they can cause cracked or broken teeth. Plus, if small pieces are ingested, your pet may choke or experience a blockage in their esophagus or intestine. You should also avoid pigs’ ears and rawhides, as they may be treated with potentially harmful chemicals and/or contaminated with dangerous bacteria.

4. Instead, offer them fruits and vegetables.

That’s right! Fruits and vegetables can support your dog’s health. Blueberries are high in vitamin C and can protect your pet from urinary tract infections. Carrots serve as a good source of vitamin A, potassium, and fiber. Cucumbers and celery, thanks to their low calories, are great treats for dogs who need to lose weight. Celery can also help to freshen your dog’s breath. Watermelon, at 92 percent water, is great for keeping your pup hydrated in the hot Florida sun — just be sure to remove the rind and seeds before serving it!

5. Pay attention to the nutritional content of treats.

Treats shouldn’t make up more than five percent of your pet’s daily caloric intake, so it’s important to know their nutritional content. For instance, your pup probably loves peanut butter and cheese. However, you should use these treats sparingly (like during a vet appointment or when you’re cutting their nails), as they’re both high in calories and fat. Note that some store-bought dog treats, like bully sticks and pill pockets, should also be avoided due to calories.

Your pet’s nutrition — both what’s in their bowl and in their treat jar — should be used to support their overall health.
